Accountants write too much.

Richard Feynman said, “If you can’t explain something to a first year student, then you haven’t really understood.”

If your audience is not made up of qualified accountants you need to use simpler language. With a non-financial manager you can’t hide behind accounting terminology. You need to explain what you mean in simple terms.

Here are three steps to simplify your writing.

  1. Assume your reader is a novice and avoid accounting jargon.
  2. Try very hard not to use any word with more than three syllables (like this post).
  3. Remove the adjectives and adverbs

Remember, clear writing is not just for your reader. It will make you stand out from the crowd.
